How to find the best moving company for you

Posted by cgreitz84 on January 8, 2013 at 8:55 AM

So often when someone is starting the moving process they find themselves at a stand still as to which moving company they should hire.  Or even where to begin finding a reputable company to get a moving quote from.  Even in the day and age of the internet it may seem impossible to find a mover that makes you feel truly comfortable with the moving process.  If you find yourself in this boat then here is some helpful advice to help you navigate the path to a happy move.

Let's start with the internet,  it can be your best friend or your worst enemy when it comes to selecting a moving company.  Not too mention it is now officially one of our favorite tools when it comes to finding information on any and everything.  It's important to remember when searching the internet that it is not just the website results that you should be looking at, if you neglect to check into the character and reputation of the mover you find online you may find yourself in a sticky situation come move day.  Look around their site for a little, do they give you links to moving information sites, or a .PDF of the government issued Rules and Regulations handbook that informs you of your legal rites.  Just as important do they have real testimonials from customers, and do they allow anyone to post comments about their move?  From there do a little background checking, wether you use Angie's List, Yelp, Etc.  and find other real life opinions about the company before you move ahead

A tiny addition to  the internet section, beware of Craigslist movers, most of the movers that post on Craigslist are trustworthy but as we all know there are a lot of scams out there so be careful before you pay anything...this could be said about all moving companies though which is why we are not done yet.

Other handy resources is your local phone book...I know it may be covered in dust burried away somewhere but it's always been there and it still works just as well.  Most reputable moving companies will buy space in a phonebook even if they do have an internet presence, and it's always good to double check what you found on the net by looking in the phonebook and seeing if the company is actually putting money out there to build there business.  Most of the time that is a good sign that you are dealing with a legitament company because fly by night operations rarely spend much and try not to leave too many traces of their existence.

It can be a hair pulling experience moving to begin with so make sure that before you hire a mover that they will be saving you the anguish, because isn't that what your paying for in the first place!  Just remember to do some leg work and really look into any company before you do business with them, the extra time spent at the begining will save you time, money, and headaches in the end.

The process of finding a good mover can seem daunting. I always check out at least 10 movers by researching their history.

I agree, it seems like the internet can potentially be a good place to start when looking for a moving company. If I were to look up movers online, I would look up several reviews for different companies. Most of the time you can tell if a moving company is one that would be good to hire by the number of positive reviews. You shouldn't solely rely on reviews though. It's also important to make sure that they're also certified.

I will keep in mind all the things you have shared above, It?s good to make a plan first than to place things from one location to another and hiring cheap moving companies for that is an ideal solution. As they know pretty well which thing has to be packed in which manner and how it has to be placed on the moving van.
